Answers Before Adoption

Start with the conditions under which a claim holds. Then decide whether those conditions match your operation.

Is detecting fruit the same as being able to pick it?

No. A crop can be visible but immature, unreachable or blocked by stems and supports. A picking decision needs maturity, location and clearance information.

Inspect perception decisions
Which crops are easiest to automate?

There is no universal ranking. Consistent presentation, accessible attachment points and predictable handling help, but variety, crop training and environment can change the answer.

Can a harvesting robot operate without people?

Some tasks may run autonomously inside a defined operating envelope. Supervision, logistics, maintenance and fault recovery still need explicit responsibility.

Plan shared working areas
What does harvesting success rate mean?

It depends on the denominator. Ask whether success is measured against attempted picks, detected targets or all eligible crops, and whether accepted quality is included.

Keep the denominator visible
Does a soft gripper prevent bruising?

Not automatically. Contact force, pressure distribution, surface contamination, transfer and container placement can all damage produce. Some bruising appears later.

Inspect delayed damage
Can the same machine work after rain?

Only if its assessed operating envelope includes those conditions. Wet surfaces affect sensing and grip, while soft ground changes traction and stability.

Will I need to change crop training or row layout?

Possibly. Improved access can help a robot, but pruning, trellising and layout changes have costs and agronomic consequences that belong in the evaluation.

Can I compare cycle times from different demonstrations?

Only when the boundaries and conditions match. A pick motion time is not equivalent to elapsed field time including retries, travel, bin handling and support.

Use more than one clock
What should happen when the robot is uncertain?

It should follow a defined response such as taking another view, deferring the target or requesting assistance. Repeatedly attempting the same uncertain action is not a complete recovery strategy.

What should I request before buying?

Request a representative crop trial, clear acceptance criteria, quality checks, intervention logs, safety documentation, support arrangements and an economic model using local inputs.

These answers provide general evaluation guidance. Machine safety, food safety and contractual suitability require qualified, operation-specific advice.
